How do I nominate somebody for the Top 20 Under 40 Business & Community Achievement Awards?
Visit www.20under40.ca to complete the nomination and ensure we have your submission by April 5th, 2019. A nomination is easy and you can even submit a nomination without the nominee knowing in case you are going for a ‘surprise’ honour. When we confirm their nomination, we will request further information such as their approved resume, bio, photograph, and letters of reference. If you are submitting a nomination for an individual who is unaware of the nomination please do so well before the nomination deadline to give the nominee an opportunity to gather the furthered required information.
Can I nominate more than one person?
You can nominate as many people as you’d like — colleagues, friends, family members or someone you know through their work within your industry, at your place of business or in the community.
Will the nominees be told who nominated them?
No. The nominees will be told that they were nominated and that they need to confirm the nomination, but we won’t provide them with the nominator information.
What makes someone a good candidate for Top 20 Under 40?
Top 20s are the best and brightest and show it at a relatively young age. They are all different but they are all high achievers. They include business people, entrepreneurs, artists, designers, athletes, community organizers, politicians, educators, inventors and more. They give back to the community and elevate their neighbours through their work, whether that is in their career or through volunteerism.
Does being nominated multiple times help my nominee? Does it show that many people wanted them on the list?
No. We encourage people to make their nomination together. While you may want to ensure that your nominee was considered and nominated, the main person who will be impressed by multiple nominations will be the nominee, not the judges. The quality of the nomination, rationale, and endorsements carries more weight than multiple nominations.
The person I want to nominate lives outside my region but they work within it, where are they eligible?
All Top 20s should have a strong connection to the region where they are nominated. If their strength of their nomination is ‘community-spirit’ and that’s mostly evident where they reside, then that is the region where the nomination should be submitted. Vice versa: If they work in a different region than they reside and their accomplishments are mostly in their career, nominate appropriately. If in doubt, nominate and we’ll sort it out.
I received an e-mail saying I was nominated, what do I do now?
To accept the nomination you must provide a current, authorized resume and a signed confirmation form stating your permission to be considered for an award and a current professional portrait. We will ask to clarify your career achievements, education, volunteerism and community work. Please visit the nominee page for further detailed information.
What will happen if I don’t complete the confirmation form?
If you have been nominated but you do not complete the confirmation form or provide your resume, your nomination will be withdrawn and your information will not be sent to our judging panel for consideration.
How are the Top 20 selected?
We solicit nominations from Vancouver Island’s business community through the media and multiple networks, business organizations and community groups. From those nominations our regional judges create a short list of 100 nominees who have demonstrated the highest levels of achievement, whether in their career or community work — or both, as is often the case. The short list is sent to a judging panel made up of Vancouver Island business leaders. These judges go through the nominations and debate the merits of the candidates, weighing their achievements until they find the Top 20 for the year.
What makes a nomination stand out from the pack?
Our judges look for achievements in career and community work, so try to be as specific as possible when you are filling out the nomination form. Measurable achievements are best — such as increasing sales, profits, or adoption by a community; awards from professional associations or other groups; completion of a major project; media recognition and other accolades. But we know that many achievements aren’t easily quantified or highly acknowledged, so give us as much detail as you can. The judges look for community and volunteer involvement that speaks to the nominee’s willingness to help others selflessly as well as their commitment and contribution to improving the community.
